Virginia USA: Am moving from Uk to USA, What is Norfolk like ?
Norfolk is a large urban area with good areas and bad, like any other city. Public schools vary, also like any other city. The whole tidewater area economy revolves around the numerous military bases and the tourist industry at Virginia Beach.
Overall, it’s MUCH better in the city of Virginia Beach, which is right next to Norfolk.
I have lived in this Hampton Roads area my whole life (25 years) and I can tell you that there are good parts of Norfolk and bad parts, just like any other city. Virginia Beach has a much better school system, and is more suburban than Norfolk, and that’s why I live here now. Norfolk is a small city, and it is home to the world’s largest Naval base (NOB) so there is a lot of military in the area. If I had to live in a particular neighborhood, I would live in Ghent or in the homes of the Wards Corner area, those are my favorite places in the City. Larchmont is also a good area also.
