Check your local bookstore outdoor sports section or your library branch for paddling guidebooks. I can help you with Pennsylvania Rivers and many in other states but not Virginia, unfortunately.
You can also post your question on the forum on
(it is free to sign up and they never spam you) and you will get a lot of personal recommendations for kayaking locations in that area almost immediately, maybe even photos and links to videos. They also have a map resource on the site that you can click on where people post the best put-in spots on all the rivers in their areas. It’s a very active canoe and kayaking site and a great source for that kind of info.
